About this session:
Building code and life safety code allowances are often taken during thedesign of new buildings. These include ICC and NFPA allowances forincreased building height and areas, frontage increases, construction types, etc and increases in travel distances, common path of travel, dead endcorridor distances, exit number and remoteness, etc. All of these allowancesrely on critical fi re protection systems complying with inspection, testing andmaintenance criteria. All too often, the lack of proper ITM, only focuses the attention on current issues caused by system impairments (i.e. citations by AHJs/insurer, tenant attention, etc). However, fi re protection systems are part of the entire building's design history. Key assumptions were made during the basis of design stage to move ahead with the code allowances. The implications of a failing/lacking ITM program go far beyond the immediate annoyances. This presentation will set out to convey the importance of ITM from this standpoint rather than the more traditional standpoint.
1. Understand the impact of ITM on building and life safety code design allowances
2. Understand how design allowances, in conjunction with compliant ITM, affect the users and key stakeholders
3. Recall the types of design allowances and how a robust ITM program is necessary for continued code compliance through the lifecycle of the building.
4. Identify how issues outside of the facility maintainer's control can greatly affect their responsibilities to coordinate, react and respond regarding facility fire protection systems.
